Professional Master's Program in Big Data
In 2014, the School of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University launched the Professional Master's Program in Big Data. This hands-on program is intended for students with some programming experience who wish to learn more about the state-of-the-art in data analysis. The M.Sc. in Big Data is geared towards students who wish to prepare for an exciting, well-paid career in the data science industry.


Visual Analytics Graduate Certificate
The graduate certificate in visual analytics (VA) is an interdisciplinary graduate program consisting of technology and theory courses along with courses on applications of this new field from the Schools of Interactive Arts and Technology and Computing Science, from the Faculty of Business, Faculty of Education, and the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology. It combines the four key aspects of visual analytics: cognition, technology, society, and integration. The program is offered at the Burnaby and Surrey campuses.



Certificate in Business Analytics and Decision Making
The certificate is motivated by the rapid growth in the use of large data sets and sophisticated analytic methods in business decisions, which in turn is driven by the improvement in competitiveness and profitability that these methods provide. According to a recent McKinsey report, in the United States alone, “the demand for people with the deep analytical skills (including machine learning and advanced statistical analysis) could outstrip current projections of supply by 50 to 60 percent. By 2018, as many as 140,000 to 190,000 additional specialists may be required.…also needed: an additional 1.5 million managers and analysts with a sharp understanding of how big data can be applied."Note that this is only open to students already enrolled in the undergraduate program.


Continuing Studies Visual Analytics Program
SFU’s new Visual Analytics Program, developed in partnership with the Vancouver Institute for Visual Analytics, will provide a practical foundation in visual analytics tools and techniques. Drawing from expertise in computer science, information visualization, cognitive and social sciences, and information and graphic design, the program will help you explore and analyze big data with objectivity and agility, and propose effective business solutions.

The Minor in Data Science provides advanced numeracy skills to majors in disciplines where new discoveries rely increasingly on the creation, management, and understanding of large data sets such as biology, chemistry, economics, and psychology. The minor is open to all majors in the B.Sc. program.

Applied Data Analytics
The Applied Data Analytics Certificate (ADAC) from BCIT Computing provides the computer science foundations for data analytics systems. Students learn how to determine data requirements, plan for the entire data life cycle, model data, and use IT tools to mine data for business intelligence and data-driven decision making. Starting with relational database systems, students have a foundation for data warehouse, data quality improvement, and visual analytics. Statistics for data analytics, IT and Internet Law, and IT security are required courses, along with Hadoop for an introduction to Big Data.
